The NICU - Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - cares for critically ill newborns who need intensive care and hemodynamic monitoring. A neonatologist, who is accessible 24-hours a day, oversees the medical care and provides consultation and assessment.
The neonatologist is assisted by neonatal nursing staff, respiratory care specialists, nutritionists and others who are specially-trained and ready to assist. The neonatal team will also work closely with the baby's pediatrician to ensure infant good health.
Since the health condition of each newborn can vary significantly, each length of stay for a baby varies also. But generally speaking, newborns are cared for in the NICU until their health improves and becomes stabilized.
Once parents are comfortable and feel confident that they are able to care for their baby on their own, they will receive specific discharge instructions and the baby will be released and may go home.
